Ms. Carol Ng, Chairperson of Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (HKCTU), was arrested yesterday by the national security department of the local police and alleged to have committed the crime of subverting the state power along with more than 50 law makers and democrat activists under Hong Kong’s National Security Law.

The ITUC-AP deeply worried about the political suppression in Hong Kong. Shoya Yoshida, the General Secretary of the ITUC-AP condemns the arrest and urges the Hong Kong SAR Government to immediately release and drop all the charges against the HKCTU Chairperson Ms. Carol Ng. and Hong Kong pro-democracy activists. Shoya also calls the Government to respect fundamental rights and freedoms under the international human rights treaties and cease political suppression now.

The ITUC-AP representing more than 60 million workers in the Asian and Pacific region is calling its affilities to stand firmly with HKCTU and support Ms. Carol Ng and pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong in exercising their legitimate human rights and closely monitoring the situation in Hong Kong.
