In a letter to His Excellency Dato Lim Jock Hoi, Secretary-General of the ASEAN, ITUC and ITUC-AP join the ASEAN Trade Union Council (ATUC) in strongly condemning the objection by the military junta in Myanmar to the participation of the Confederation of Trade Unions Myanmar (CTUM) and the nomination of Mr. Maung Maung, CTUM president and ATUC vice president, as the ATUC representative to the 14th ASEAN Forum on Migrant Labour (AFML) meeting in September, 2021.

The ITUC and ITUC-AP reiterate that the nomination of the CTUM as the workers’ representative for Myanmar in the AFML lies in the hands of the ILO Governing Body (GB) Workers’ Group and that the objection of the military junta in Myanmar of CTUM’s participation in the 14th AFML and its nomination of the Myanmar Seafarer’s Federation (MSF), a group that hardly qualifies as a representative union in Myanmar, disrespects the ILO GB nomination of CTUM.
