The ITUC-Asia Pacific is deeply concerned about the safety and wellbeing of the people of Afghanistan after the fall of Kabul to the Taliban forces. Tragic and appalling stories of chaos, killings, and violence since the Taliban's seizure of Afghanistan's political seat must be enough to urge the international community to act swiftly to protect the lives and human rights of innocent civilians.
"We call on the international community, especially the United Nations, to take immediate and decisive actions to prevent further human rights abuses from happening. Humanitarian aid – including safe passage and granting of refugee status – must be urgently granted to Afghan civilians, especially the vulnerable women, children, and human rights defenders, who try to flee the country for their security," Shoya Yoshida, ITUC-Asia Pacific General Secretary, said.
"We support and echo the call of UN Secretary General Antonio Gutierres on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to 'stand as one', to 'use all tools at its disposal to suppress the terrorist threat in Afghanistan and to guarantee that basic human rights will be respected.'
"In these difficult and uncertain times, we also extend our solidarity and support to the working people of Afghanistan and our brothers and sisters in the Afghanistan trade union movement," Shoya Yoshida added.
