Jan 2015

A great tragedy struck Indonesia on July 10, 2015, when a chemical pipe exploded in PT Mandom, West Java, Indonesia. Here, 23 workers lost their lives and 39 more workers were hospitalized in intensive care with severe burn injuries. All victims were on-the-job trainees who were yet to receive proper OHS training and education despite having high production targets. The Conference suspects this accident to have been caused by negligence and intent of PT Mandom management to chase said targets.

After the KSPI response to this event, the ITUC, ITUC-AP and all affiliates are called upon to send letters to the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Manpower Minister, and Employer of PT Mandom, urging them to: conduct a thorough investigation into the accident, improve the Indonesian OHS system, give adequate compensation to the victims, and take deterrent action against employers responsible for the tragedy.
