On 4 April 2025, the Constitutional Court of Korea upheld unanimously the impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol, four months after his declaration of martial law on 3 December 2024, resulting in his removal from office.

“This is a historic victory of people’s struggles for rights and democracy in Korea,” Shoya Yoshida, General Secretary of the ITUC-Asia Pacific, said. “The impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol is just the first step in strengthening democracy in Korea. The fight continues with the trade unions' campaign for comprehensive social reforms through inclusive and open dialogue. Such reforms must guarantee freedom of association and collective bargaining, labour protection, and quality public services for all."

He also expressed his deep respect to the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) and the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU), the Korean affiliates of the ITUC-Asia Pacific, for leading the workers’ struggle for democracy.

Furthermore, ITUC-Asia Pacific supports the call of trade unions in Korea to penalise and hold Yun Sook-Yeol and his accomplices for their insurgent act.

Since the declaration of the martial law, ITUC-Asia Pacific has been standing in solidarity with FKTU and KCTU in their fight for democracy and commits to continuously support their campaign for the realisation of fundamental rights for all workers in Korea.
